Thoughts on Halloween

I always find it a bit of a dilemma with my children as to what to do on Halloween. I strongly believe that dressing up your children as serial killers and axe murderers, and knocking on strange doors and demanding treats is not a good lead for the children to follow. We have in the past conducted 'Pick a Treat', where the kids baked Halloween style biscuits and then went round the neighbours and offered for them to ' Pick a Treat' - giving them a gift that the children had made themselves.

I have now come across a website partnered by The Children's Society and The Church of England. http://www.halloweenchoice.org/ This offers fun alternatives for children to get involved with at Halloween but with a positive message. There is another website www.curbsproject.org.uk/kit.html where you can find more ideas for children which promote a more positive message.

Love it or hate it - it seems a pity to stop children having fun at Halloween, but it is important that we give them a good positive message of this celebration of All Hallows Eve. Why not try something different this year?
