The premiere of Julian Mitchell's new play Family Business at the Palace is achieving fantastic reviews.
Described by the Guardian as a “modern-day Lear” and by What’s On Stage as “like an Oscar Wilde comedy”, Mitchell has been commended for being a “fastidious craftsman who knows how to explore ideas while generating suspense (whilst) displaying his familiar virtues... of irony, wit and intelligence.” (Michael Billington, Guardian)
Billington also commented that the character of eco-warrior Hugo puts “the environmental case more clearly than anyone I’ve yet encountered on stage” and that the surprising revelations in the play had the “audience gasping in delight.”
Matthew Lloyd’s “effortlessly smooth” (Anne Morley-Priestman, What’s On Stage) direction was deemed “immensely watchable” by the Guardian. Ruari Murchison’s set has also achieved much praise, having been described as “seductive” (Guardian).
Gerard Murphy’s portrayal of William has been heralded as “an excellent central performance” (What’s On Stage) and Anna O’Grady described as giving “real character... in a very well-paced portrayal” (What’s On Stage) as William's daughter, Kate.
Family Business plays at the Palace until Saturday 22 October. Tickets are available from the Box Office on 01923 225671 or by booking online.
